INTERVIEW 1 - RICHARD KERSEY / CHIRPER PAUL WRIGHT & RICHARD KERSEY And welcome back to the Link Thru Social podcast. Well, we have a special guest for us today, Richard Kersey, and he's from chirper.com. That's C H I R P P E R dot com. Richard is an engineering leader and AI practitioner focused on two intertwined questions. How AI is reshaping the way software gets built, and what it takes to keep human spaces human as machine-generated content floods the internet. Richard, welcome to the program. Thank you so much. Glad to be here. Looking forward to talking to you. Yes, I appreciate you taking the time for us today. before we get started, how about you just give us a little bit about your background and how you got here today? Sure. Well, as you said, engineering leader. I've been building software for decades now and led to where I'm at today, which is founding a social media company for where humans get to talk to humans and we verify that and put you through a vouching process so that we can kind of get the bots out of our conversations. They're flooded, they certainly are, Richard. I'm also a social media manager and have run a social media company since 2011, and it's just unbelievable how many bots and now with the emergence of AI, you know, just it's flooded with a lot of lot of there's a lot of mess in social media, and there's no other way to put it. But what's it like to build a a real product largely through AI assisted development, though? Well, it kind of takes a little bit of burden off your shoulder on the kind of the build part of it only. So you still have all the decision work, all the strategy work, and all the planning work, you know, you still have all that kind of going into it, and you're the creative force that's you know picking which direction AI is gonna focus on. But then now you have like an assistant who can do some of the coding and deployment and server stuff that is kind of secondary to the big questions and the strategy and you know the direction you're gonna take and those kind of things. So it increases your productivity by something like 10x. So it's really good. Absolutely, absolutely. Now, you the the debt internet problem. What happens to social media when most content isn't human? we talked about that at the top of the show. what happens? What happens? well, people at first they start complaining about it. And you can see that online yourself, anywhere you go. any conversation that goes on for more than two or three comments, someone's accusing somebody of being a bot, and we don't know whether they are or not. And so it starts with a lot of complaining and then it moves into kind of apathy and giving up because you can't beat them because there's just gonna be you know hundreds and thousands of more bots than you are, and they're going to be able to spit out content faster than you could ever refute it, and so it becomes this apathetic place of I just won't participate at all. And you need to become an a bystander who's just watching conversations happen instead of participating. Yeah, no, for sure. Now, anonymy and accountability. Why why they're usually treated as opposites and how to have both. Right, right, right. Well, as of today, like most social media, the only way like they try and keep their networks from degrading, you know, and going downhill and the quality of everything going down. And so, how do they do that? They they want to ensure it's humans that are talking, and the only way they figured out how to do that so far is to steal your private information, force you to give up, you know, more and more data about yourself, so that they can say, okay, now we think you're human. And so they hurt their users by saying, you know, you can only come in if you give us all this information about yourself. And so they they have like this temporary fix going on that bots don't really care about because they're gonna spend all day beating it anyway. And what ends up happening is the real users they say, I'm not gonna do that. You know, they're high-producing, engaged users, they say, I'm done then, and they move on to doing something else, and the bots say, We're gonna keep going until we get in, and so now it becomes more bots, less humans, and it just kind of builds on itself that way, and so that's that's the accountability part of it. or I'm sorry, that's the anonymity part of it. But then how do you keep them accountable if you aren't gathering that information? Is the question, right? So they have to have something they put on the line, they have to have some stake in the game, right? And for us, that becomes a two-way accountability that we talk about often, and so instead of taking your information, we just say vouch for somebody else. So send an invite to somebody you think is human, right? And if that is true, that helps your trust score, and you're now trusted to be a good voucher for other humans, and that if it ends up they are not, this is where the accountability comes in. Now, and no one else is doing this, is that it now hurts you because you were the one that vouched for them, similar to like if you were to recommend someone for a job and they ended up not being good at the job, no one's gonna take your recommendation again, and so that's a two-way accountability that just does not exist on any social media site right now because it wasn't architected that way in the beginning. Now, why is AI deep fake detection it's a losing battle? you know, there there are many ways around it right now. you know, Meta and and X are putting a disclaimer on a lot of the posts that they were you know assisted or generated by AI, but there's lots of ways around that. And I know a few, I'm not gonna share them here on the show, but you know, why AID fake detection is a losing battle? And and can you see in the future as an engineer ways to improve that possibly? Yeah, well it's a losing battle because it just improves so quickly and kind of improves on itself, even. I mean, you may have seen things like two years ago or so, the Will Smith videos of him eating spaghetti, and then how that looked then versus how that looks now is like a magnitude of order better, right? so yeah, we have that situation where it just continues to exponentially kind of get better until we don't know when it could just be forever or could plateau, but we don't know. and then now drop the rest of your question. So if you want to no, no, I was just talking about the the the deep fake detection, and and you know how how can these social media platforms keep up with the AI to actually state that whatever poster or video that is coming up on their particular platform is AI generated? Well, okay, so this is where Chirper really steps up its game in this. Most sites right now, the way everything's reactive. So you like you post, someone has to flag it or somehow say that this is bot or AI generated, then that somehow leads to you, that particular account getting banned. but with Chirper, what we've architected is a lineage of accounts so that every canal, every account that comes in is connected up through a chain of accounts that led to that. And so we have that two-way accountability up and down the chain. And if someone at the bottom of that chain, for example, ends up being a bot farm, a network of bots that have invited a whole bunch of other people that it vouched for, we can say with a button push, that whole bot farm is gone. And that's really where the detection is different for Chirper versus everyone else, because you, if you're reactive to a single post, you're just banning that post and that user. What we're looking at is at the effect of what makes a bot farm valuable. So we're saying the entire bot farm it has a single entity, is helping each other, they're linking to each other, they're upvoting each other, they're posting about the same thing, they're kind of working within a network. And with lineage, we can detect the entire bot farm and send the whole thing packing, and that becomes economically unviable for them to even be here. Sure. Now, chirper.com is the website. how many users have you so far? Well, we've only been around since March, so we've been like four months, and we have like three to four hundred users today, 500 maybe actually up to as of today. And we've been slowly growing, and really the whole point of this is that we are sacrificing growth for quality, and so we are meant to grow grow slowly, and we want to make sure it stays that way because there's some stake when you come in that you are vouching for someone else, so that is gonna be slow growth, and we expect that. Of course, of course. Now, I I plan actually on on going to your website and and setting up account because I I want to I want to follow the progression of this because this is very interesting to me. being involved in social media for so many years, this type of platforms to me. And I I think there is a place for it. We we are so inundated by so much right now, and there's so many things going on with the social media platforms, the emergence and speed of AI, that sometimes you have to hit the brakes and and and and and join something that you know isn't so chaotic, I guess, is what I'm trying to say. What is the feedback you've had so far from these several hundred users that have come on board? So the idea is great, is what we hear. You know, we love this idea. We you know want to stand behind it. We have a few very engaged users that are posting original content. We have a few very engaged users who are like asking, how do we promote this? How do we get more people here? You know, that because we're definitely working on getting the network effect. everyone loves the idea, but they understand it's gonna take a while to build, and there's some kind of pieces we're still working out for how we can reduce friction a bit for signing up because it is you know it's a it's a tough process to get someone in and say they're human. And so we have to make that hard, but not so hard that nobody can join. And that those are some kinks that we're working through. but so I'm gonna send you an invite so that you can get in and you'll be able to join immediately with that. And I'll be vouching for you because I can speak to human. I am human. That's for sure. Okay, well, Richard, this is wonderful, and I encourage everyone, everyone out there to go to chirper.com. That's ch irp e r.com. And when they go on the website, Richard, what what should the user expect when they first get on the site? What what did they see? So we had like as of this morning, just recently changed exactly how the homepage was working. We previously had asked someone like before they got to any content to come in and you know say I'm human first and sign up. But now we've we've moved to content first, and now we'll have to add a join button at the top, which at that point you'll have an account. You'll go to a chat screen, and I will personally be taking chat messages from you and vouching for you in my trust chain. So we're not ready to like scale that to something huge. Like I said, it's slow it takes a few minutes for me to respond to you because I'm not you know sitting on top of that chat button, but so but it's just me, and I'm the one who's taking the people that come in and I vouch for you. You add you come to my trust chain. Well, I love it. Richard Kersey, thank you so much. Everyone go to chirper.com and yes, please send me that invite. I like to to join the movement, and let's circle back in in a few months and have another interview here on the Link Thru Social podcast to discuss how this is going to be proceeding throughout the summer and into the fall. I'd I'd love to have you back. Absolutely. Love to check in with you again and talk about how much we've grown to big, huge between now and then. Wonderful. Well, we have a great guest for us today, Louis Swart. And he has 35 plus years of building, scaling, and selling businesses. Louis, teach teach coaches and business owners how to delegate, automate, and dominate their marketing without losing their mind or their weekends. I love it. Louis, welcome to the show. Thank you so much. Really, really appreciate being here. just before we get started, I'm gonna let our viewers and listeners know that Louis's website is clarify.ironbridge.com.au. And Louis, why don't you try to condense that 35 plus years of experience? Awesome, awesome. Just give us a little bit more about your background and how you got here today. Excellent. So you know, I've I've been an entrepreneur my whole life, you know, and some of the things that I've learned along the way is that if you don't delegate, it costs you money. Now I'm sure all of us have heard that, but I'll tell you what happened to me in real life. I actually had a plumbing business. I had 10 plumbers, and you know, I was 25, 10 plumbers. I thought it was bulletproof. Okay. I went to a broker and I said, like, you know, how much can I get for it? Basically, who can afford to buy this business from me? You know, how much can I get for this, you know, empire that I'd built? And he said, Louis, who does the accounts? And I said, Well, well, I do them and who does the quality control? Well, I do it, and who does the hiring? Oh, I do it, you know. I, I, I, I, I. And he said to me, Louis, your business is worth nothing because I have to find another Louis like you who can do all these things. And I still remember that sinking feeling in my stomach, going, like, wow, I thought that this, I thought I'd built myself this business, you know, but I'd actually just built myself a job that nobody else even wanted this job. And so fast forward five years, and I had done another business with my brother. This time we had 200 staff, and when it came to sell that business, we said to the broker, he said, Who does that council? You know, that guy, that guy, that guy, that guy. It was all like none of the fingers pointed to us. And so we were able to sell that business for five million within two weeks. But that was purely because we'd learned how to delegate. So we'd learned how to delegate everything in the business so that the new owners could literally just step into the business and take over. and that was a really valuable lesson for me. You know, now somebody could have told me that, you know, you need to learn how to delegate, and it probably would have made no sense to me. But because I lost all that money and all that time on the first business, it's a very real thing for me. And I'm trying to help other people so that they don't have that. Oh wonderful, wonderful. Yeah, no, that's that's actually that's actually amazing. you talk about this delegate, elevate, accelerate. what's the biggest mistake coaches make that keeps them stuck doing everything themselves? I I am I'm very guilty of this. And why why why don't you give us your views on that? Well I'd like to start off with a little story, okay? So there's a guy, there's all these guys, and they're chopping down the trees as like it's an Amazon, and they're making this road, and they're they're all chopping down the trees, and they've got their axes, and they're chopping away at the trees, and they've got an axe sharpening station, and they've got a you know, store and handing out axes, and they've got somebody cooking them meals. And they all go, like, where's the boss? Why is the boss not here? You know, why is he not chopping down trees? Why is he not helping sharpen the axes? And they they all decide that they're gonna go look for the boss. So they, you know, they all go on this march to look for him, and they find him. And what he's done is he's climbed up the tallest tree in the forest, and he's actually looking out ahead to make sure that the road's going in the right direction. And literally, how many of us now? Business are down there sharpening the axes, helping to cut the trees. And we we're so busy in that, you know, busyness that we're not actually looking ahead, we're not actually elevating ourselves out of our business, so we can actually take that time to you know look ahead and look for what the new opportunities are, or if we're even going in the right direction in our business. And so that's why that whole concept is we need to learn how to delegate first. That allows us to free up time. Once we free up time and we've got other people working on our business, we can then elevate so we can actually start looking at working on our business instead of working in our business. And only then can we go, wow, there's an opportunity. Hey, if I actually speak to these people and I can do a collaboration with them, hey, I could get more work there. people are prepared to pay more, I could do something else, then you can your business will really accelerate. But it all starts with you delegating, all starts with you freeing up that time so you can actually look for those opportunities. Absolutely. Absolutely. Now you've been in business many, many years. Can you walk us through a moment when things didn't go according to plan? how did that reshape your approach of moving forward? Look, hey, I have a saying and I say, you know, I've I've wanted to run, I've wanted to run away and live on a coconut under a coconut tree on an island many times. And if you're in business and you've never just wanted to run away, not see any other people and live on a coconut tree on an island, you probably haven't been in business for long enough, right? Because that happens. We have things that just don't go to plan. A lot of things don't go to plan. You know, I I I've done I've made some really silly mistakes. I mean, building that plumbing business was a was a big mistake because I built this plumbing business, you know, and then when it came to sell it, I couldn't sell it. So I got what the equipment was worth. That's what I walked away with. you know, and then I went into other businesses where you know I had partners that were you know not very honest, and you know, I lost millions in those transactions. and you walk away from it, and you you know you can spend the rest of your life looking back and saying, Oh, you know what, I got swindled, oh, I could have done this or I could have done that. But the reality is that's not going to change anything. So, you know, how do you look ahead and go, okay, what can I learn from what I what happened? Right. And I just call it school fees, you know. So if you went into a business and you did something, you lost a million dollars, that's school fees. You've literally just paid school fees, right? And now use that lesson, don't make that mistake again, and then you know, go ahead. Yeah, and that happens with coaches, you know. So I coach some people, and some people come to me and they say, Oh, Louis, you know, you're you're too expensive. And I go, That's fine. You either pay for me in money, or you pay in time. But either way, you pay. There's no way you get away from paying, you know. Because when you have a coach, they can literally say to you, Hey, I've been here, and this is a devil that you are gonna find as soon as you get to that level. They don't even know that that devil's there. You've already been there, you've conquered that devil, you moved on to the next level and the next devil. And you know, that's why it's important that we have people help us. Absolutely, absolutely. Now, every week we seem to be talking about the emergence of AI, and I'm I'm curious to know your thoughts and and how potentially content that can convert using AI. Can we be using content that's gonna convert using AI? Absolutely, absolutely. So I've actually done experiments on this where people said, Oh, if you create it with AI, you're not gonna get as much engagement as if you do a real life video, okay. And I've done real life videos and I've done AI videos, and I've said, hey, I'm a real human, okay. You know, let's judge if you give me more likes or if you give the AI more likes, and then I've done another one with an AI version, and the AI person wins all the time. The AI gets more views than me. So it depends how you do the AI. You know, I I I train some people on AI, and one thing that we do is we say, we want you to write a story on Little Red Riding Hood. Ask your AI to write a story on, and it just writes a story, and it's pretty generic, right? But then you say to it, I love unicorns, I love fairies, I want the prince to ride off into the sunset on his white horse, you know. Write me a story on Little Red Riding Hood, and it gives you a story. Or you say, I love horror movies, you know, when the person's leg gets ripped off, and you know, there's that sore movie, and there's like the walls are closing in, and he shows them an x-ray, and there's a key behind their eye, and they've they've got a scalpel and they basically cut the other person's eye out to get to the key. Write me a story on Little Red Riding Hood, and you can imagine that those two stories are extremely different. Little Red Riding Hood stories, but it's because we've given it some context, we've told it what we're trying to do, we've told it what we love, what we like. and that is really where people are lacking. So people go, hey, I'm a business coach, write me a post. It's gonna write your AI slop, it's gonna just write what it's gonna write some generic stuff. It doesn't know who your target market is, and that's what my whole clarifier program is around. You know, how do you find out who your avatar is? What age are they? You know, are they male, are they female, are they married? What's their relationship like? What's their health like? What are those fears? You know, what are those real those real deep fears that they have? What are those frustrations that they've got? What are those dreams and those desires? What are all those things that your ideal target market has, right? And once you know that, and once you get your product really clear on what your product is, you know, and a good example of that is McDonald's, you know. I mean, we you know, a lot of us go, oh McDonald's, yep, they sell burgers, they're in the business of selling burgers, and they're not. McDonald's is in the business of real estate, they sell burgers to actually pay for the real estate. McDonald's is one of the biggest real estate businesses. but that's literally what we need to be looking at. You know, we need to be looking at our avatar. What do exactly are we selling to? And then what's our product? What exactly are we selling them? And once we feed that into AI, we're gonna start getting like really, really good content coming out. And granted, we still got to go in and just edit it and adjust it, but I do a program where I create six months' worth of content in one hour for people. Oh, and yeah, and that's part of the clarify program. And I initially thought, I'll tell you a true story. I initially thought, okay, there's no way that AI can be emotional, okay. There's no way that AI can can evoke an emotion. And in one week I had two different people crying. Two different people because I ran through the thing with them and I said, tell me about your really your dark fears. Tell me what tell me what you know, I want to get I want to get more leads in my business. Okay, and what does that really mean? Well, it really means like I want to make more money. Okay, and what happens if you don't make more money? Well, then I'm gonna succeed and I'm not gonna succeed. And what happens if you don't succeed? Well, I feel like a failure. And and what why is that why don't you want to feel like a failure? Well, because my dad always said that I would never amount to anything, and that will prove him right. Okay, and once you get to that level and then put that into AI, it comes up with stories and fears and stuff, which literally will target your heartstrings so much. Okay, because you've really got the essence of what you're trying to of the fears that this person's got. Yes, you know, and I had two people crying when I was reading back their own fears and frustrations and dreams and desires to them. and then we create stories, and so we have normal stories, and then we also have metaphors, you know, some metaphors around that sort of thing. you know, there's some concepts that are a bit harder to explain in our business, and how do we explain that with a story? and so we get those and we explain them with a story, and then we create Facebook posts and LinkedIn posts, and then I interview people and we break it up into shorts for their socials. So it's a real six months worth of content that we're creating for them. just all in one hour, which is phenomenal. You know, you you couldn't do that before we had AI. Absolutely not, absolutely not. how are how are you incorporating the AI into your business? There's so many ways. obviously got programmers in Nepal, and we're currently creating, we're currently running a project, okay? If you come to us with a business idea, if you come to us with something that you're struggling with in your business, yes, and you say, Hey Louie, I'm struggling to get I'd like to analyze my website. Somebody came to me and they said, Hey, I'd like to analyze my website. And so we went on and we created a website analyzer. You go in there, you just put your URL URL in and it analyzes your whole website, tells you how you could do better, tells you what stuff you should improve, gives you quick tips, and it's free. It's completely free. You know, somebody else came and said, Hey, I want to be able to just see what's happening with my LinkedIn. We created a LinkedIn analyzer, does the same thing. You know, somebody said to me, I don't really want to pay you to do my content with me, I'd like to be able to do my own content. And we created a website free where they can go and do that. So there's all these things that you can do, which never we were never able to do before, you know. and and the the software that we've got now, I've got Claude running on one of my computers, and it can literally go through, you can look in my Strip account, tell me who's paid me over the last you know couple of days, tell me when my staff have logged in and logged off. look at all my emails, go through all my emails, tell me which ones are really important that I should get back to, create drafts of those emails for me. look at my calendar, tell me how I could rearrange my calendar to make it more efficient. You know, and this is all just a this is all just a basic one, this basic one with no real super duper training to it. Right, right. It's incredible. It is, it's absolutely phenomenal, and it's just just gonna improve over time. It's where where is the ceiling on this? I don't think there is one. It's just absolutely amazing. You know the weirdest part is tell me that every three and a half months, AI doubles in capacity. Every three and a half months, so that means within one space of one year, it will be eight times as as good because it's one, doubles, it's two, doubles, it's four, doubles, it's eight. In five years, it will be one million times better than it is today. I mean, that is it's mind-boggling. And and you mentioned the McDonald's analogy earlier that they're in the real estate business. That's the business to be in, to have AI and memory centers. If you have some extra lands, that's the kind of business you want to get into the future, you know. But we do have to wrap things up shortly, Louie. the B myth, I see on your screen there in a new release book. Tell us a little bit about that and and maybe about your website and where they can find it. Perfect, perfect. So the B myth is the busyness myth. You know, we have this thing, we meet somebody. How many people do you meet? And you go, How are you going, Paul? And they go, I'm so busy. I'm so busy, I'm really busy, I'm just busy at the moment. I'm busy. You know, how was your weekend? So busy, it was just busy, everything was busy, okay. And we kind of associate busyness with this badge of honor, right? I'm so busy, it's my badge of honor. And some of the reasons we say we're busy is because I'm so busy, I must be loved. Everyone keeps giving me stuff to do. I'm so busy, I definitely must be worthy because people keep piling on stuff to me. Okay, I'm so busy, I must be safe because nobody else would want this job because it's so busy, right? So literally, we've collapsed those beliefs with busyness, and so now we take that on as an identity. I'm so busy, okay. And we, you know, we we don't look after our own health, we don't look after our relationships, we don't look after our business, we don't look after, you know, so many things in our lives because we're busy, we're so busy. And in the book, I give you a whole lot of tools. I've got some really cool tools for people to use, which will actually help them to be able to break free from that, you know. is it okay if I just share one of the tools with you quickly? Absolutely, yes, absolutely. I'd love to hear so one of the tools that I've got, and I can tell you that this one it's just it's so simple that people go, won't really work. But it every single person that uses it is blown away with it. Okay, so think how much you'd like to earn next year. Okay, let's say you want to earn $200,000. Right. If you went now and you worked for a boss, you could you'd probably work maximum 40 hours a week, and probably 50 hours, 50 hours a year. Okay, so 40 hours a week by 50 hours a year is 2,000 hours. That's how many hours you've got in a year to actually work, to make $200,000. So what you do is you take the $200,000, you divide it by the 2,000 hours, and this gives you a figure of $100 per hour. So now you've got a benchmark. You need to earn at least $100 every single hour. Now what happens is this book that's over here, it's a little bit off-center. Okay, so I go on Canva and I'm like, I'm just gonna quickly straighten it, and then I find out I'm still there an hour later because when I straighten the book, then the other sign, the other side goes quiggly, you know. Yes, yes. and I go, I justify it. I go, you know what? I could have got it done for $10, but I've actually saved myself $10 because I didn't have to pay anything. And the reality is that I should have earned $100 for that hour, and I've earned $10. So I've actually lost $90 in that hour. So the next hour, I need to make $190 just to make up for that hour that I lost. Playing catch up. So when you think about it like that, you know, it's hard enough to make $100 an hour to try and make $190 an hour is a whole different type of thing. And so how we apply this is we get a posted note. and on the posted note, we actually write that figure. So if you want to make $100,000 a year, that's $50 an hour. If you want to make $200,000, that's $100 an hour. And I strongly suggest you double the figure because you don't really want to be working 40 hours, 50 weeks a year, right? You write that figure down and you stick that figure somewhere on your monitor, on your laptop, on your wall, somewhere, somewhere that's completely visible. And then every time you're doing something, I want you to look up at that post-it note. So you'll look up and you'll you'll see a post-it note. You'll see a post-it note, and you're gonna you're gonna be doing Canva, and then you look up and you'll be like, would I pay somebody $200 an hour to do this job? And most times you'll have that feeling in your stomach, like, hell no, of course I wouldn't pay somebody. That's ridiculous. But that is what you're paying yourself. That's what you're paying yourself to do that. So if you wouldn't pay somebody else that, you shouldn't be paying yourself that. You should be getting somebody to do it. And literally, that's why us being able to delegate to AI, being able to delegate to virtual assistants, that's why it's so important. Because we've got to maintain that level. And so in the book, I initially wrote it like a business book with all chapters and things, and and then I looked at all my books on my bookshelf and I thought, I didn't really read them, I haven't really read them, right? Yeah, and so I was like, Well, the parables, I've read all the parables, so I wrote the book as a parable, but it's got all these really important and cool tools all the way through. and it takes you through this guy's journey. and you honestly will learn so much from the book. you know, it's it's it's really good. And currently it's only a dollar. It's a you know, you can get the even they can get the online version, it's a dollar for the book. Because literally we're trying to we're trying to get as it into as many people's hands as what I possibly can. You know, because I really want to see people succeed. I really, you know, that eight out of ten, eight out of ten coaches fail in the first two years. That's a staggering figure. You know, and I don't even think about those eight people that failed. I mean, it's terrible that those eight people fail, but each of those eight people has actually got a whole family behind them. Each of those eight people have got people that rely on them. And if they fail in their business, this come this affects the whole everything around them. You know, it's a terrible place to be. And so that's why I'm so passionate about helping people and literally going out of my way to do whatever I can to you know be able to give you free resources, give you tools, help you do whatever I can so that you can actually be, you know, one of the two that succeed. Hopefully, we can get that up to four that succeed. That'll be amazing. Absolutely, absolutely. And what's your what's your w website, Louie?
